Quonset Huts or Quonset Hut House as it is popularly called are prefabricated metal buildings in various shapes and designs that are made for both residential and commercial applications. The term Quonset was first used in the 1960's by an American engineer, Thomas P. Quonset. It was his quest for an environmentally friendly building that eventually led him to the innovation of this unique type of home. Quonset houses, as Quonset hut buildings are popularly known are a series of corrugated metal boxes that have been designed to fit into a corner or into a free space in a room. It is, essentially, a metal shelter in an octagonal shape with side walls.
The name Quonset hut house comes from the Quonset metal panels that are used in the construction. In its original design, Quonset huts were rectangular and featured flat panels on three sides. The original Quonset huts were made out of corrugated galvanized steel which provided low maintenance and durability. Today, individuals mostly refer to Quonset huts or Quonset hut house as simply metal enclosures with flat panel doors and window openings.
